About this test
ESR measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a tube in one hour. A faster rate can indicate inflammation somewhere in the body. It does not point to one specific disease, so the result is read together with symptoms and other tests.
Why it is done
- To look for inflammation or infection.
- To help follow some long-term inflammatory or joint conditions.
- To monitor a known condition over time, as advised by the doctor.
Preparation
No special preparation is usually needed.
