About this test
Vitamin B12 helps the body make red blood cells and keeps nerves healthy. Low levels are common in people who eat little or no animal-based food and in some stomach or gut conditions, and can cause tiredness, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.
Why it is done
- To look for the cause of anaemia or constant tiredness.
- To investigate tingling, numbness or memory problems.
- To monitor people on a vegetarian diet or on long-term acid-reducing medicines.
Preparation
Fasting may be advised. Please ask us before the test.
