About this test
Indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin is the part of bilirubin not yet processed by the liver. It is usually worked out by subtracting direct bilirubin from total bilirubin. Raised levels can be linked with faster breakdown of red blood cells or with how the liver handles bilirubin.
Why it is done
- To help find the cause of jaundice.
- To assess conditions where red blood cells break down faster than normal.
Preparation
Fasting may be advised in some cases. Please ask us or your doctor.
