About this test
HDL cholesterol is often called "good" cholesterol because it helps carry other cholesterol away from the blood vessels. A higher HDL is generally better, and a low HDL can add to heart disease risk.
Why it is done
- To assess heart and blood vessel risk.
- As part of a complete cholesterol check.
- To follow the effect of exercise, diet or treatment.
Preparation
Fasting for 9 to 12 hours is often advised when other lipid tests are done together. Please ask us before the test.
