Blood Urea

Another waste product that helps assess kidney function.

About this test

Urea is a waste product formed when the body breaks down protein. The kidneys remove it from the blood. A raised level can be linked with kidney problems, but also with dehydration or a high-protein diet, so it is read along with creatinine.

Why it is done

  • To check kidney function along with creatinine.
  • To assess hydration in some illnesses.
  • To monitor people with kidney or heart conditions.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed.
