About this test
eGFR is a calculated value that estimates how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. It is worked out from your serum creatinine together with your age and sex, and gives a clearer picture of kidney function than creatinine alone.
Why it is done
- To assess kidney function and stage of kidney disease.
- To follow kidney health over time in diabetes or high blood pressure.
- To help doctors choose or adjust some medicines.
Preparation
No special preparation is usually needed. It is calculated from a serum creatinine result.
