HDL Cholesterol

Measures "good" cholesterol, which helps clear other cholesterol from the blood.

About this test

HDL cholesterol is often called "good" cholesterol because it helps carry other cholesterol away from the blood vessels. A higher HDL is generally better, and a low HDL can add to heart disease risk.

Why it is done

  • To assess heart and blood vessel risk.
  • As part of a complete cholesterol check.
  • To follow the effect of exercise, diet or treatment.

Preparation

Fasting for 9 to 12 hours is often advised when other lipid tests are done together. Please ask us before the test.
