Bilirubin Total

Measures all the bilirubin in your blood; high levels can cause jaundice.

About this test

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment made when old red blood cells are broken down. The liver processes it and sends it out of the body. Total bilirubin is the sum of direct and indirect bilirubin, and high levels can turn the skin and eyes yellow (jaundice).

Why it is done

  • To investigate yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • To check liver and bile duct function.
  • To check jaundice in newborn babies, when advised by the doctor.

Preparation

Fasting may be advised in some cases. Please ask us or your doctor.
