Total Cholesterol

Measures the total cholesterol in your blood.

About this test

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance your body needs, but a high level in the blood can raise the risk of heart disease and stroke over time. Total cholesterol is usually read together with HDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Why it is done

  • To check your risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
  • As part of a routine health check.
  • To monitor treatment for high cholesterol.

Preparation

Fasting for 9 to 12 hours is often advised when triglycerides are also tested. Please ask us before the test.

This information is general and is not medical advice. Please speak to your doctor about your results and treatment.
